Have you noticed the Transformers movie's rating is never mentioned in the advertisements? The film was rated PG-13 in March, so this might be part of a marketing strategy you've noticed other action films trying as well. Go see your movie, and forget about how the idiotic MPAA categorized it.
Transformers was said to initially be given an R for "intense violence". Rather than have Bay cut the film to what kind of robot fighting the idiots at the MPAA think is too strong for a 13-year-old, Executive Producer Steven Spielberg had to explain to the ratings board why an R rating for Transformers action was not warranted.
Officially, Transformers is rated PG-13 for "intense sequences of sci-fi action violence, brief sexual humor, and language".
Wasn't there a TV spot on Nickelodeon that mentioned the PG-13 rating? ("Freakout" with Optimus Prime at the end, or "Friendship" with Frenzy at the end). A couple of months ago the ad on the back of a Dreamwave comic (a movie poster with the hand breaking through a wall) may also have had the rating.
Why is the rating not widely publicized in the trailers and recent TV spots? Because everybody loves action movies, but some movie-goers have prejudices against PG-13 or R-rated movies. In this case, the studios wants everyone excited to see the movie, and ready to go, without caring what it's rated. They want adults to go see Transformers without thinking it has been watered or cut down (which it hasn't, thanks to Spielberg and Bay), and maybe they want the youngest Transformers fans ready to go, without having to tell them the MPAA says you're too young.
