Transformers, directed by Michael Bay, earned $27.4 million on it's official opening day, Tuesday, July 2nd. This is the biggest Tuesday opening ever, smashing a record set last year by Pirates of the Carribean 2: Dead Man's Chest, which took $15.7 million. Transformers already did $8.8 million on Monday night's advance showings, which won't count for any box office until the weekend, and will contribute to an impressive opening week tally.
Because of its early weekday debut, Transformers did not have one of the biggest opening days of all time, and ranks 56th. On the flipside, Warner Bros counter-programming tactics failed miserably with Licensed to Wed. When Transformers was moved up from a July 4th debut to July 3rd, Warner moved Licensed to Wed against Transformers, and the Robin Williams film only made $2.2 million in it's debut, taking fourth place.
With more than $36 million in the trunk so far, Transformers is trucking towards a $150 million haul for it's first week. Reviews and audience reactions have been mostly positive, and if the momentum keeps rolling for Transformers, this weekend could possibly even bring its box office take closer to $200 million.
