Transformers Breaks July 4th Box Office Records E-mail
Transformers made $29.1 million on the July 4th holiday, crushing Spider-Man 2's record $22 million on Independence Day in 2004. Transformers also set a record for biggest Wednesday, when its $29.1 million box office take broke a record previously held by Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ in 2004. Take that, Jesus Gibson.

Transformers has been breaking records all week. The movie, which cost $150 million to make, made $8.8 million in advance screenings on Monday night, July 2nd. Those tickets will only be counted as part of its opening week. On the official opening day of July 3rd, it set a new record for the biggest Tuesday box office haul with $27.9 million.

Wednesday's ticket sales brought Transformers domestic take up to $65.7 million. Transformers has made $119 million wordwide, and that was before the three-day weekend of Friday through Sunday.
